Our History

HEBN Publishers Plc. (formerly Heinemann Educational Books (Nigeria) Plc) was established in Nigeria as a sales outlet of Heinemann Educational Books, UK in 1962. The company was incorporated in 1969.

In 1972 with the indigenisation decree, the company became publicly owned with 40% shareholding by Nigerians while Heinemann Educational Books, UK had 60% of the equity. But this was reversed with the revised indigenisation decree of 1977. It became 60% to Nigerians and 40% to Heinemann, UK, and fully owned by Nigerians in 2006.

The company has been built from the start by an all-Nigerian staff. The company’s strength hinges mainly on an efficient administration, sound financial management, a strong publishing team and a dynamic sales and marketing department.

As a front-runner in publishing for almost fifty years now, the company has an enviable collection of titles, which span all levels of education – nursery, primary, secondary and tertiary. Some of these educational textbooks have been adopted by the State Ministries of Education for use in their schools; and also pre-qualified by the World Bank Primary Education Project and PTF National Educational Materials Procurement Programme for supply to schools and colleges in the Federation. The company also has children’s literature titles and general books on leisure, contemporary socio-political and economic issues, etc.
